up?

If Deborra Murphy is asking you this
question, you have probably been grown up
for some time.

As coordinator of adult re-entry services,
Murphy guides adult students step-by-step
through the difficult process of re-entering
the academic community. She gives advice
on what classes to take, assistance in obtain-
ing financ[...]el Services

About 30 people attended a re-entry ori-
entation meeting in the Student Union[...]available at the
college.

Lumped together as “re-entry students,”
the audience was made up of re-careering
professionals, displaced homemakers, an[...]e people who staff them.

A packe? was handed out that contained
booklets describing the services offere[...]emond,
adisplaced homemaker. “Idon’teven know
what I want to study yet. I hope I can get in
to see her before | register tomorrow.”

“Re-entry is a process,” Murphy says.
“We help them through that process one
step ata time. They want to know, “[...]d how do I get there.” We are
here to give them that sense of direction.”

feels that reasonable people can come to-

We're all familiar with this type of

brains all night, unless, of course, it was
problem number 13. Then a quick pe-

don’t have a magic wand for that.”

the defeat of Ju[...]but, as
always, there is another side.

Actually, it’s not at all surprising that voters refused to
pass the bond proposals. With the political climate as it is,
the last thing voters are prepared to do is a[...]thrown onto this
rocky, parched political ground. It never stood a chance.

So, what does it mean to us? District Chancellor Dr. Paul
Elsner d[...]Hospital confirm the obvious.

Those who voted against the bond didn't necesarilly see
aproblem with the[...]ey.

Now more than ever, voters are suspicious of what their
government is doing with tax money. Citizen[...]ings and
loan crisis to AzScam, feel as if they’re being tricked and
robbed.

This distrust was rein[...]fort by the district to keep voting numbers
low.

It is well known that many residents leave the Valley to
escape the heat of summer. It is also well established that
bond elections stand a greater chance of passing[...]are tallied.

Many voters were irritated to find that many polling
places had been combined, making it difficult to find voting
locations. This also led to the belief that the district hoped
to keep the number of voters d[...]zona Republic reported administrators and faculty re-
ceiving salaries far above the national average[...]s were not well-informed of the cost to
them. But it’s more likely that either they didn’t believe it
would actually cost so litle or they felt that every lite bit
adds up.

The possibility remains that MCCD might try to pass this
proposal in a future[...]voters of the actual costs
and benefits to them.

It was probably short-sighted for voters to reject this past
bond proposal, as it is an investment in education, but the

Why should you care?
Here are some reasons

“Why should I care[...]n every edition of this semester's College Voice, you will
find an election column in this space. As a[...]ose
columns, I will provide the basic reasons why you, as a
college student, should care enough to vote[...]ing process is becoming informed.
Read everything you can about any candidates you find.
Think critically. Who do you trust? Who makes sense?

Once you're informed, you can shape your own ideas and
express them when you vote. Let your voice be heard, not
to fulfill a c[...]world, but for yourself.

First, one must realize that Bill Clinton and George Bush
are not the only can[...]luding the Libertarian and New Alliance parties.

You're not even limited to party candidates. Vote for
anyone you want. Luke Perry. Charles Barkley. Bullwinkle.
You can even vote for me.

If all this sounds trivial and silly, perhaps it is. A vote for
Daffy Duck won't show up on the TV[...]d pay more attention to our concerns.

Certainly, you as an individual can’t accomplish all of
this, but you can do your share. Voting is the great
equalizer. Whether you're old or young, prince or
pauper, you only get one vote.

Make it count.

Best Non-Daily Newspap[...]ons, and new politics create a huge culture shock that
many find difficult to handle.

Pll admit that it was difficult for me. Having grown up in
the Midwest, the change was enormous. It took me nearly
two weeks to learn the street syst[...]m.

But, to be honest, this state has many things that I
appreciate. It just took me a year to realize it.

I decided to write down some of the things I li[...]ona. Maybe this will give new residents a peek at
what this state has to offer.

I broke up the list int[...]sgusting: Fat women in bikinis, Arizona
politics, that stuff on the bottom of the theater floor, the
Pho[...]ackseat.

After going over this list, I found out that Arizona comes
out pretty even overall. Like any other place, it has its share
of good and bad points.

So, to all[...]ece of advice: Give
yourself a little time before you pack your bags and get the
hell out of Dodge.

Isn’t it always the sweet innocent-looking person at the
beginning of these films that ends up as the psycho?

In those other obsession-thrillers, there was always
something special that made that particular movie enticing,
or the slightest bit o[...]Leigh starin “Single White Female," a thriller that goes nowhere.

A side plot consisting of Hedy’s[...]s
"Cradle" or "Attraction."

A question to ask is what happened between the time of
her twin sister's de[...]ble to get up and fight, fight, fight; we've seen it all
before, and in far superior form.

The special effects in the movie might have saved the
film, but it turned out second-rate , like something you'd see
in the "Friday the 13th " movies.

ment we get, without getting more equip-
ment, the more we’re scrambling.”

Equipment concerns aside, Ayers and
Coggins agree that they are receiving their

a third party.

Smith explained that one of the reasons
he believes the program at Gle[...]ly working in the industry.

contacts that way, many of which I still use
today.”

Last month’s convention gave fair
warning that the Bush-Quayle cam--
paign would rely heavily on[...]ness of the Republi- -
cans begs the question, “What does;
family values mean?”

The view given by Bush and!
Quayle is that of “traditional” fam- -
ily values, a sort of “Leave it toy
Beaver” ideal: one mother, one fa- -
ther,[...]en.

Running counter to this ideal is
the reality that there are fewer tradi-
tional families.

The Census Bureau reports that in
1970, 85 percent of children in the
U.S. lived[...]toric on the issue. But, their words
ring hollow.
What does the president really
have in mind?
Bush’s stance is that the problem

is caused by a breakdown of the
traditional morals that keep a family
together.

If these values were re-established,
the tide could be stemmed and we
could retum to those good ol’ “Leave

it to Beaver” ways.

Maybe. But Bush fails to acknow-
ledge the fact that during the Repub-
lican presidencies of the last[...]"family val-
ues" issue has become so politicized
that its importance is measured only
in how much polit[...]secondary to polls and vot-
ing blocks.

Whether it's the single mother
working to support her family[...]ing astray, this issue
deserves more dignity than that.

Good Policy: The College Voice's guidelines for[...]e Constitution
as other members of the press, and that
freedom will not be limited to only ideas
which a[...]ave an enlightened
school district administration that has is-
sued a statement that the Hazelwood vs.
Kuhimeier Supreme Court decisio[...]-
munity Colleges. (Hazelwood vs.
Kuhlmeier ruled that “educators do not
offend first amendment rights[...]d upon
language in this case.”

Bradshaw states that “student newspa-
pers at Maricopa are not limit[...], we recog-
nize the responsibilities inherent in that free-
dom.

To the best of our ability as student jour-
nalists, we will refrain from printing mate-
rial that is libelous, obscene or would cause
reckless disr[...]ndment, the
editors will not permit unbased fears that
lead to censorship.

Have you ever tried to learn a foreign language?
ne taking Spanish for the first time and, boy, am
ost!

It’s much more difficult than I thought it would
be. Everything from sentence structure to v[...]billboard and, if I’m lucky, even under-
stand what they are really saying on Channel 33.

Whether you believe it or not, you have tried to
learn a foreign language too. This[...]s. After years of study, only a few have
mastered it.

It is known as Politics.

The language of Politics i[...]st
peculiar in existence today. Nowhere else will you
see SO many meanings for one word or phrase. No
o[...]on changes as rapidly
and completely as this one. It is one of the oldest
languages in history, but no one has ever defined
it.

Political language today is as curious as ever.
What makes it even more interesting is that the
definitions change depending on one’s persp[...]uld
be close enough to use as a general guide the next
time you catch a candidate on the tube trying to
explain w[...]n.
Biggest problem they have is convincing others
that they too are real people.

28 percent of drug-related deaths are

and one step back.

This year, rumors were abound that Bush

of a large budget for student activities, a

Teally think that community college is the

anything off-campus again.

What standard of “right” and “wrong” is Brad presuppos-
ing to make such a bold, absolutist claim? What if the “free

AINGE: I think it’s something you can do without using

you play the game, keeping in shape and trying to keep
your body and your mind fine-tuned for a season, that
golf is something that can relax you.

I play golf and I love to compete on the golf course, but
it’s not the same. It’s not the same intensity. I find it
relaxing; I don’t get angry on the golf course. It’s just
very relaxing for me. It’s a good outlet and a good
diversion.

playing against one guy; the next day he’s on your team.

I’ve been with a few different teams now, so I don’t
think it’s going to be weird. It might be weird playing

Do you have trouble meeting people here at Glendale? Are you
sick of going to school everyday with 18,000 othe[...]nchenko has found trouble
making friendships, and it’s not because she isn'ta friendly person.
“There are so many people on campus, it’s just hard to meet
anyone,” she said.[...]“because there was
an American dream in Russia that you can come to the U.S. and you
can get whatever you want.”

At the age of 17, Panchenko moved to Ca[...]was flexible and got used to everything, although it’s hard
living with other families,” she said. “It’s hard to get used to people
you don’t know, and then leave them.” .

Being in[...]anchenko is home-
sick and misses her family.

“What is very important to me is my parents. I just miss them so
terribly,” she said. “It’s so hard when you leave the people you love
behind.”

Although she denies it, Panchenko has the fashion sense and look

“Reservoir Dogs” is a movie in that category, and

angry movie, lashing out against law enforcement,

entire film, they switch to the events that take place

Later, this officer is brutally tortured. It is obvious

The profanity and violence in the film makes it
realistic, but at most times, it's irrelevant.

said, sounding upbeat and as happy as ever,
as if it were her first day on the job.

To some, it means the birth of
Christ.

To others, it means spending time
with family and friends.

And to others, it simply means a
day off.

The meanings of Christma[...]s
as an essential part of Christmas,
some feeling it means more to them
then the religious aspects of[...]has lost value over the
years.

“People look at it as just another
day,” said Kamerman. “It doesn’t
mean anything religious to them.”

traditions and treat them with re-
spect.

Itis this spirit we can strive for, not[...]er Scrooge or some
other fictional character. But it wasn’t
fiction; it was true. And since Smitty's
stores were packed o[...]ing, they will again be open Christmas
Day. And, what's more, other Valley
stores, just as hungry for b[...]employees at other supermarkets,
notably Safeway, that they too, will be
open.

The trend is inmotion. Whether it’s this
Christmas or not, other stores wi[...]bad pub-
licity, but they piled in the customers.
That's their only concern. And the other
stores will follow.

For those of you old enough to remem-
ber, supermarkets used to cl[...]ng at all.
Again, Smitty’s is the trailblazer.

You might be saying to yourself,
“Yeah, so? What difference does this
make to me?”

First, have a little heart. Do you really
want to spend your holiday working? Do
you want your family members to miss
spending their holidays with you be-
cause they have to work? Are you an-
swering “no”? Supermarket employees
feel[...]a lack of shopping might help
your Christmas Day. You can shop any
other day of the year. Wouldn't you like
to come home Chrisumas Eve, kick off
your shoes and say, “Whew, I’m done.
What I have will have to do. WhatI don’t
have, we can do without. Let’s celebrate
Christmas.”

You can do this now by ignoring
Smitty’s on Christm[...]me with your family. Resist
the temptation to buy that one little item
you have forgotten. If you've forgotten
whipped cream or biscuits or whatever,
it will not kill your holiday.-

the student government building to shake[...]wo groups of people have come
together and proven that they possess the
talents needed to be politicians.

That's correct, they have mastered the art
of taking our money and making it theirs.

I know all of you made it to last week's
Associated Students meeting (all three of
you that is), but for those that didn’t, the AS
voted to send 3.5 of its members[...]ington D.C. fora
National Legislative Conference. It costs
$900 per person.

This, together with the E[...]have
been stolen any better. if the pros had done it
themselves.

“Our job is to facilitate the need[...]o learn politics
from the wizards of Washington.

It is apparent that the second need has
already been met.

Dave Goodi[...]an idea about the
first need.

Goodings believes that if the AS and ESA
were to arrange meetings with o[...]comfy), more
crews to tidy up our campus, phones that go
straight to the Security Office (but that is
OK, I personaily like being mugged on my
way t[...]hool government has not put any plans
into action that will “facilitate” the students.

there are a few other areas that deserve your
“laser beam” glance. Think of them as a

checklist stuck to your refrigerator. Hope-
fully, you will be able to get to most of them

only minimum wage, it’s the only way they
can catch a cold wit[...]lans lying around congress. Pick one
out and make it work. End of story.”

administration. Maybe it will show men that

If you have them pay them back through
community service, then you will be killing
two birds with one program.

@ Do[...]Don’t budge on your Pro-choice stance.
In case you forgot, it won you many votes
from the Republicans due to their hard[...]t too much from the defense
budget. History shows that a large military
cut usually has disastrous effec[...]ace in history.

@ Don't abandon your principals. It may

make for harder battles with congress, but it
will be worth it.

@ Don’t forget the people. We need you
now more than ever.

These are just a few of the problems that
need your attention. There are hundreds
more, but the ones listed above are a good
Start.

Maybe it is naive to ask you to solve all of
our troubles.

Maybe one man alon[...]e to
dealing with even a handful of these.

Maybe you can do nothing to prevent
politics as usual.

But maybe the feeling that millions of
Americans had the day after you won the
election wasn’ tjust that of misguided hope.
Maybe you will actually make a difference
in our everyday l[...]ost Christmas, the traditional time
for hope.

If you can put something under the tree
for the American people, let it be a small,
brightly packaged box filled with all of your
promises to us.

And maybe when we open the box, it
won't be empty.

employees to the school and what they contribute and how

What a sight I must have been at the beginning of

guy considers.

I ask myself “What the hell is the purpose to life?
Why didn’t I introduce myself to the inspiring
beauty that caught my undivided attention earlier?
What idiot father bought his daughter a $20,000
car? What does it really mean to be successful?”

Christianity is[...]rs” and
yet we haven't believed in or practiced it for years.
We have the supposed courtesy to smile[...]h all of these hypocrisies between how we act
and what we really are, isn’t it ironic that some
would have us called a “ChristianNation?”

I think of family values and what it means. Does
it mean forcing myself to submit to ideas simply
because they came from my parents? Does it mean
wishing things had been different?

My thoug[...]or guidance instead of
encouraging them to figure it out on their own. I've
accepted that I will one day pass on, but I will do so
without[...]sanity and self-deprivation.

I hate my job is my next thought. I wonder if we
live to work or work so that we may live? We buy
new cars and homes, but do we own them or do
they own us? Is it he who has the most who wins or
he who chooses to[...]suits and
sport coats and I have to remind myself that I was
once like that. A teen working 60 hours a week to
pursue the “American Nightmare.” It’s the
damndest thing I know to sell the[...]graduation. I think back to the
complete stranger that caused my heart to skip
earlier. She was just her[...]e because I know she has an understanding
of life that daddy’s litdle girl may never be deep
enough tocomprehend. Success is not comprised
of material things. It’s being authentic, having
someone to love, inspire, understand and accept
you. It’s good health so that you may pursue what
you are truly passionate about while having history
remember you for it. It’s having true friends by
your side when you die who care about you and
couldn't give a damn about what you will leave
them in your will.
