Relationship between Man and Nature in Paulo Coelho’s Alchemist: An Ecocriticial Study (2025)

Ecocritical Approach to Paulo Coelho's The Alchemist

Dr Pradeep Makwana

Research Journal of English Language and Literature (RJELAL), 2016

The Brazilian author Paulo Coelho is one of the most read writers today. Most of Coelho's works are replete with nature portrayal and beautiful landscapes that a normal man may fail to perceive through his naked eyes. Paulo Coelho's The Alchemist is the best novel to present ecocritical elements in literature and their interconnectedness. The novel is nature oriented and beckons humanity to go back to nature to preserve and protect the environment. Environment has been fundamental to our tradition and culture. It's only in the past decade or two that environmental literature has become a main stream. There is a growing demand to protect and preserve the environment. The rise of the concepts like go green, green policy, environment market, carbon trading, etc., have been entering human day today life. Ecocriticism is a recent phenomenon in the area of theory and criticism which represents a growing awareness of environmental issues. It is based on an "earth centered approach to literary studies" and reveals that human culture is connected to the physical world, affecting it and affected by it. It is concerned with the relationships between literature and environment or man's relationships with his physical environment as reflected in literature. Hence, Ecocriticism, the growing critical theory, is an investigation into the relation between humans and the natural world in literature.

NATURE AS A GOOD MORAL: CONTRIBUTIONS FOR HUMAN ECOLOGY- LA NATURALEZA COMO UN BIEN MORAL: APORTES PARA UNA ECOLOGÍA HUMANA

Iván Darío Moreno-Acero, Ezequiel Garcia

To think of a relationship in which the harmony between man and the environment prevails, and not a continuous confrontation, is equivalent to think of a human ecology. This relationship will only be possible if individuals and communities reflect on whether interdependence with nature and attribute a moral value to the way in which their actions affect or benefit to the environment and to themselves. That education and educators enhance the skills with moral which individuals adjust their behaviors, represents an important step for the awareness of the human and natural environments, since the principle of ecological action would not be determined by factors external to the subject, but that would depend on the moral capacity that this has and therefore of your personal will, which makes the action even more significant and full of meaning that when it arises from another social dimension.

Human Ecology: nature as archetypal deity

Alisson Duarte (Ecologia Humana/Human Ecology)

Revista Ártemis, 2018

The term nature, in a broad sense, refers to the phenomena of the physical world and life in general. Complex are their definitions, involving qualities of essentiality, origin, spontaneity, and everything that was not directly manipulated or produced by human action, including the universe itself. Taking into account that the sciences in their entirety have developed through their observation, the objective of this study is to promote the worldview of nature as a foundation for human self-knowledge, since according to the conception of human ecology, humans are conceived as an indivisible part of their environment. Faced with the current ecological constraints, the proposal is justified, above all, by the need to reconnect man with nature in a superficial and deep sense. For that, we used the theoretical revision method (especially conceptual contributions of Arne Naess and Carl Gustav Jung) and Aristotelian deductive thinking to reach the proposed reflections. The results suggest man as being indivisible from nature, reigned by forces, tendencies, instincts, and cycles similar to those of the natural environment. From natural contemplation it is believed possible to formulate deep understandings of human nature, be they biological, psychological or spiritual.

Ecosophy and the relationship between man and nature in contemporaneity

IJAERS Journal

2020

Among its functions, Philosophy allows us to understand reality and, in view of today's environmental issues, Ecosophy consists of the study of the relationship between nature and human beings, proposing discussions between the environment, man and social relations in modern times. This work aims to reflect on the relationship of man with the environment through the principles of Ecosophy. The Ecosophy proposed by Guattari (2009) addresses our understanding, as part of the environment in which we live, and how we learn and act on the environmental issue, based on the three ecologies: that of the environment, that of social relations and that of human (mental) subjectivity. Thus, it is possible to understand that Ecosophy is more than a reflection on ecology, nature and man-nature relationship, it is a search forconcrete actions, taking into account man's interaction with the environment. In this way, Ecosophy stimulates a broad environmental awareness, making it possible to extract from the field of learning and knowledge the potential to become capable of understanding what our planet needs and reviewing our actions.
